The female Giant Pacific Octopus provides high parental care to her offspring for a short time.  The amount of care required to hatch these offspring is extremely high, and the female octopus usually dies a short time after caring for her young.  Meanwhile, male octopuses die shortly after mating.

Octopus Protection?

No octopuses are protected by the CITES or the IUCN Red List.  But according to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, it is extremely difficult to determine whether or not these octopus species are threatened.  Because they move around a lot and are extremely intelligent and careful creatures, the difficulty remains in finding how many octopuses there actually are remaining.
